Quick Tips
· Visit the Teacher’s Lounge (if you have a good one).
· Do not work through breaks and lunch.
· It’s okay to make mistakes and admit it to your students.
· Take time to write and reflect.
· Set up a Support System.
· Don’t give up!
· Get parental support. Regular communication with parents is a must. Reach out to parents and form relationships with them.
· Make sure you take good care of the head janitor and school secretary.
· Look beyond the labels. Kids are more than their labels.
· Dress professionally.
· Prepare ahead of time how you will handle student crushes.
· Match your teaching style to the student’s learning style.
· Networking is extremely important.
· Take time to observe other teachers. Ask the students which ones they like and why, then go observe them.
· Learn something new with the students.
· Stay organized! This is a MUST! Five minutes of unorganized time can lead to chaos.
· Have student materials prepared a couple of days before the actual lesson (in case the copier breaks, you get sick, etc.).
· Show no fear! Kids are like dogs and can smell fear, and they will go for the throat if given the chance.
· Don’t be afraid to write grants (ask experienced teachers for help).
· Be prepared for teacher observations/evaluation (like portfolios, lesson plans, grades).
· Ask experienced teachers for advice or input.
· Get peer support. Find a mentor (besides the one assigned to you – in case that person is not available).
